Gerard of Cremona's Latin interpretation of the Arabic edition of Ptolemy's Almagest from approximately 1175 became the predominant version in Western Europe until the Renaissance. Unknown to Gerard, a prior Sicilian translation from the original Greek had been completed around 1160 under Henricus Aristippus, though this version saw less medieval usage than Gerard's.[5] Subsequent Greek retranslations emerged in the fifteenth century by George of Trebizond and Johannes Regiomontanus. The Almagest established the foundation for Western astronomical understanding until superseded by Copernican theories.
